Frequently Asked Questions

Q: What makes Allegheny Valley School different from other facilities?
A: Allegheny Valley School is known best for its outstanding reputation. We maintain a low profile in the media, but keep excellent relationships with the county and other agencies. Our case workers spend time with families to make their transition as easy as possible; throughout this transition, we do not take the place of the primary family, but instead become a second family. All of our facilities are very well kept. Most of our residents are referred by families of our current residents. Our facilities include community group homes, campuses and program centers. All are safe and very well maintained.

Q: What is the admissions process for families interested in Allegheny Valley School?
A: When a family expresses interest in Allegheny Valley School, we send out an application for an admissions packet and ask for referrals.  A primary diagnosis of IDD is required for admission.  Medical and education records, a physical evaluation and the most recent IEP, IPP or ISP will be reviewed.  Once an individual is eligible, the family has an interview with our Admissions Chairperson.  They are then given a tour of AVS and placed on our waiting list for one of our facilities.

Q: What are the specific requirements that an individual must meet to become a resident at AVS?
A:
• Primary diagnosis of intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD)
• Medical, Educational and Behavioral records for AVS review
• Physical evaluation
• Most recent IEP, IPP or ISP
• Completed admissions packet
19 years of age or older

Q: What is discussed in the interview with the Admissions Chairperson?
A: This interview is more of a meeting for AVS to figure out how they can help the individual. This is where we begin our life long relationships with our families. This interview is to make sure the family is comfortable with AVS and with the decision they are making.

Q: How can families get involved at AVS?
A: Allegheny Valley School encourages family involvement. Each of our residents is assigned a QMRP (Qualified Mental Retardation Professional) to help them to set goals through team meetings. Families can be involved in these team meetings and are encouraged to communicate with the QMRP's as often as they like.

AVS also has two Parents Associations which meet regularly and participate in AVS activities.

Q: What is Allegheny Valley School's policy on home visits?
A: Home visits are very important to our residents and we encourage them regularly. Our residents are given 75 therapeutic leave days each year. If a resident is not gone for a full 24 hours, it is not counted towards his or her leave days.

Q: What is your staff/individual ratio?
A: This depends on the needs of the individuals. In most cases the staffing ratio is somewhere between one-to-one and one-to-four individuals.

Q: What is your turnover rate?
A: AVS has a great reputation for their stability of management and administrative staff. Our house managers are also very dedicated to making our residents lives as fulfilling as possible and make every staff transition as smooth as possible.  Allegheny Valley School has more than 80 employees with 25 or more years of service.

Q: How much training does your staff go through?
A: Before working with the individuals, our new employees go through a two-week training and orientation program. They are taught how to work with our residents and give them the support they need. In addition, all staff must attend 24 hours of additional training each year.

Q: Do all of the individuals that attend programming at Allegheny Valley School live at one of the facilities?
A: Yes.  However, at the Hummelstown and Slippery Rock day program facilities, AVS also serves individuals who are residing with their families in the community and attend our adult training facilities on a daily basis
