Angels from the Heart visits NHS/AVS

Members of Angels from the Heart dressed as princes, princesses, and superheroes, and performed a song and dance routine for nearly 80 residents and staff at NHS Allegheny Valley School’s Pittsburgh Campus on April 20. Residents from the Pittsburgh Campus and the Patricia Hillman Miller Campus and community group homes were in attendance. Many of the residents sang along and danced in their seats. Cast members spent time meeting and posing for pictures with the residents after the performance. A great time was had by all! We are grateful to Angels from the Heart for spending their time and talents with us.

Making it a Great DAY at NHS/AVS!

Debbie Campbell, the owner of DAY Automotive, visited NHS Allegheny Valley School to present a $25,000 check on April 7! Residents Joe, Ed, Tony, Brianna, Brandon, Michael, and Megan accepted the check on behalf of NHS/AVS and posed for pictures with Debbie and General Manager of DAY Toyota, Jason Hamilton. After the photo shoot, Debbie and others from her team toured the NHS/AVS Pittsburgh Campus and saw, first-hand, how their support will make a difference for the individuals in our care.

Thank you, Debbie and DAY Automotive for your generous support! We are grateful to the Pittsburgh Vintage Grand Prix for facilitating this contribution, which will be applied to the Capital Development Fund.

Partners in Kindness

NHS/AVS Pittsburgh Campus residents Helen, Jonathan, Sharon, Shequala, and Vicki visited Guardian Protection Services in Warrendale, PA for the first ever "Partners in Kindness" event on Friday, February 12. The day was planned to show appreciation for the Guardian employees who have delivered gifts to the residents of the Campus during the holiday season for 19 years. “Partners in Kindness” banners decorated the employee cafeteria, cookies and Valentine’s Day themed cupcakes were served, and dozens of prizes were raffled off.

As more than 100 Guardian employees came through the cafeteria, they were greeted by, and enjoyed visiting with, the NHS/AVS residents, as well as Residential Services Director Pam Kish, Assistant Program Director Jeff D’Eramo, Therapeutic Activities Worker TeTe Green, and the Development Department’s Amy Rocini and Dorothy Gordon. The residents distributed handmade thank you cards to the employees at Guardian for their generosity.

Employees who work at Guardian in Phoenix, Arizona, who also participated in the holiday gift giving event, joined in on the celebration via video-conference.

Guardian’s president Joe Colosimo commented, “Our employees take great pride in personally shopping during the holidays for just the right gifts for the NHS/AVS residents and we support this in any way that we can. Unfortunately we can’t send 300-plus employees to deliver the gifts personally, so this event brings the residents to us and gives our employees a chance to shake hands and personally meet some of the special people from NHS/AVS for whom they have made wishes come true.”

During 2015, NHS/AVS presented Guardian Protection Services with its AVS CHAMPion Award. This award is presented to those who go above and beyond to promote and support NHS/AVS and its mission.

We thank Guardian's Joe Colosimo, Mary Lynn Moriarity, and Emil Parent for their dedication to the NHS/AVS mission!

Raising Funds to Build a Wheelchair-Friendly Pathway at NHS/AVS Slippery Rock Program Center

Each weekday, 100 individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities attend NHS Allegheny Valley School Slippery Rock Program Center (SRPC). At the SRPC they learn new skills, earn a paycheck, receive physical and occupational therapies, enjoy time with their peers, and much more. Many of the individuals have been in our care for years and are becoming more physically challenged as they age. Throughout all of NHS/AVS we strive to foster an environment where each individual can thrive and progress to his or her fullest potential. To respond to the SRPC clients’ changing needs, our goal is to construct a wheelchair-friendly pathway around the site for the individuals to enjoy the outdoors year-round.

Exercise is known to enhance function and mobility, relieve daily stressors, and reduce the severity of a range of health issues. The pathway will provide more opportunities for the individuals to exercise, experience outdoor learning, and enjoy time with their friends and family members. With support from friends and neighbors of NHS/AVS (see donor listing below), through January 2016 we have raised nearly 90% of our goal of $15,000! There is still time to help us meet (and exceed) our goal to enhance the SRPC program with a wheelchair-friendly pathway, landscaping, improvements to the sensory garden, and more! All funds raised through this effort will support these and other projects at the SRPC.

Checks should be made payable to the Allegheny Valley School Capital Development Fund. To donate online, please visit or click here to print and fill out a donation form.

When contributing online or by check, please be sure to note that your gift is in support of the “SRPC Pathway.”

For more information, please contact Amy Rocini at 412-299-2229.

Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra Visits NHS/AVS’s Pittsburgh Campus

On April 29, 2015 the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra (PSO) performed an outreach concert at NHS Allegheny Valley School’s Pittsburgh Campus. Conductor Lawrence Loh led the group through a selection of music from Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, Camille Saint-Saëns, Johannes Brahms, and more. The selections brought-out excitement and joy as residents clapped their hands and tapped their feet to the beat of the drums and perfectly blended notes. Attendees included 129 individuals and staff from NHS/AVS’ Pittsburgh Campus, Patricia Hillman Miller Campus and many western PA community group homes. Everyone enjoyed the concert and is looking forward to the PSO’s next visit in the fall.

A special thank you to Lawrence Loh, all of the talented musicians, and PSO Director of Musician and Community Engagement Programs Gloria Mou for helping to support and coordinate this wonderful concert.

Students Swim for NHS/AVS

For the third year, members of the Seneca Valley School District Swim/Diving Team held a Swim-a-Thon fundraiser to support NHS/AVS’s Patricia Hillman Miller Campus (PHMC). The event was held on March 7 at NHS/AVS’s Pittsburgh Campus pool. Members of the Seneca Valley Team were paired with consumers from NHS/AVS to complete as many laps as possible in 30 minutes. Volunteers recorded the number of laps and the time for each pair. Friends, family members, teammates and staff were encouraged to pledge per lap or make a donation in honor of the event.

This year senior Holly Sauer led the event which raised $645 for the individuals at PHMC. This event was created in 2013 by Seneca Valley’s Jacklyn Curtz for her high school senior project and continued in 2014 under Brett Foster’s leadership. Since 2013, the event has raised $1,040.

If you would like to make a donation to support the Swim-A-Thon, please call 412-299-2231 or mail your donation to: Mary Curtz, NHS/AVS-PHMC, 315 W. Prospect Avenue, Pittsburgh, PA 15205. Checks should be made payable to Allegheny Valley School Capital Development Fund; please note PHMC Swim-A-Thon in the memo.

Holiday Visit for Tracy and Her Roommates

Ashley and Nicholas Mross recently visited NHS/AVS and brought holiday gifts to Tracy who lives at the Brick House on the Pittsburgh Campus. Tracy’s new treasures included hand lotion and Chap Stick, socks, a soft blanket, and a plant. The meeting was delightful (Tracy immediately used the lotion)! Ashley also spent time meeting Tracy’s housemates, Veronica and Kathy, who spoke about the “Knight Rider” mini-series. Nicholas talked about sports with Mark and Robert.

We are grateful to Ashley and Nicholas for spending time at NHS/AVS!

NHS/AVS Visits the Sidney Crosby Charity Suite

On December 12, eleven NHS/AVS consumers and their accompanying staff members cheered-on the Pittsburgh Penguins from the Sidney Crosby Charity Suite at CONSOL Energy Center. They were invited to sit in the luxury suite, enjoy snacks, meet the Penguins mascot Iceburgh and each consumer took home a gift bag filled with items from Sidney Crosby. Everyone watched with excitement as the Pens beat the Calgary Flames 3-1. We are very grateful to Sidney Crosby and the Pittsburgh Penguins for providing this opportunity to the individuals at NHS/AVS.

Parents Association Fall Meeting

The Allegheny Valley School Parents Association held its semi-annual meeting on October 19, 204 during which a $10,000 gift was presented from the Association to the Capital Development Fund. NHS Chairman & CEO M. Joseph Rocks accepted the donation on behalf NHS/AVS. Parents Association Treasurer Diane Barna, Senator Rocks, NHS Executive Vice President Carl Clark, NHS Sr. Vice President IDD Services and Corporate IDD Director Terry McNelis and members of the NHS/AVS Development Department provided updates to the 65 family and staff members gathered for the meeting. Director of Training and Staff Development, Carol Erzen provided updates on the new programs under development including the Smart Home, Memory Care, Communications Technology and Dental Sensory. A special thank you to Lintons Managed Services for donating the delicious lunch!

During the meeting, the Parents Association also honored Senator Rocks for his years of service to individuals with disabilities. Parents Association Treasurer Diane Barna announced that a fountain will be placed in the LHAS Sensory Garden at the Pittsburgh Campus in honor of Senator Rocks. When it is installed in 2015, the plaque on the fountain will read, "This fountain is dedicated in honor of Senator M. Joseph Rocks for his commitment to and compassion for the individuals of NHS Allegheny Valley School. From the Families & Friends of NHS/AVS 2014".
